The role of the wireset is to carry the high voltage from the coil to the plugs, in order to produce the spark required for ignition. Thanks to its design, involving isolated materials, the wireset protects all electric and electronic circuits from the high voltage that runs through the cables from which it is made of. Briefly considered to be an outdated technology, to be replaced by pencil and top-plug coils, several car manufacturers have recently started to use wiresets again – proof that this product still has a bright future. Needless to say, a wireset is confronted to a harsh environment. Indeed, the sudden changes of temperature, humidity, as well as the vibrations and corrosivity in the engine bay, can all lead to an accelerated aging of the wireset. Yet, since its role is critical for the engine to be able to start and work properly, it needs to be replaced on a regular basis. EFI Automotive Service advises such a change every 70 000 km (or 3 years), as well as each time the coil(s) and/or spark plug(s) are also replaced.

This technology has greatly contributed to the success of the Bougicord brand over the world.

This cable has a stainless steel wire wound around a ferromagnetic core. Two effects allow a perfect interference suppression:

  • Inductive effect:  When crossed by an electrical current, a magnetic field appears inside it, and interferences face an inductive and resistive impedance which  will reduce them.
  • Resistive effect: The wire wound cable has a resistance role at a rate of 5600 Ohms/m. This technology is ideal for low frequencies.

 

Copper core technology

The copper core technology  is the oldest one, mainly used by German manufacturers. These ignition wires have a copper core connected to a punctual resistance, placed in the metal shielding caps fixed next to the spark plugs.
Because of this resistance, electrical current is reflected to the opposite side (like an echo) then sent to the vehicle mass. For this technology, the resistance plays the interference suppression role.

AN IGNITION WIREST : WHAT FOR ?

It has two main fuctions: 

  • Ignition : The wireset carries the high voltage from the coil to the spark plugs, to produce the spark required for the ignition process.
  • Interference suppresion : Thanks to its design and the insulating materials used, the wireset protects all the electrical and electronic systems in the surrounding from the electromagnetic disturbancies produced by the high voktage circulating in the wiresets.

 

HOW LONG CAN A WIRESET LAST ?

You wireset is subject to harsh conditions in the engine bay

The sudden changes in temperature, moist, corrosive oils, ozone, voltage variations, and vibrations, all speed up the aging of the wireset, which can lead to engine failure.

This is why we strongly advise to replace your Bougicord® wireset :

  • every 70 000 km (or 3 years)
  • when replacing the spark plugs and/or parts of the ignition system
